Kisumu Central Member of Parliament Dr. Joshua Oron on Christmas Day at City Square in the Lakeside town, hosted hundreds of street children to celebrate the day. The MP promised to enroll older street children in vocational training centers starting next year.
Every year, the MP feeds hundreds of street families to celebrate the occasion.
MP Oron noted that at the beginning of the year, they will select those willing to be trained in various sectors within VTCs across the county.
The legislator pointed out that some of the street children are old enough to undertake various training programs to empower and sustain themselves.
“Some of the older street children can be trained in the Jua Kali sectors; they can learn plumbing, mechanics, wiring, masonry, and even driving,” he said.
The MP added that they will work with local leadership to help the children access training at Rotary and other available VTCs.

“We are also looking at identifying some of those already in schools through other organizations to factor them in terms of fees.” The lawmaker stated that this initiative will provide sustainable opportunities and jobs for the children.
“We just want to feed them every year, but we also want to provide them with the skills necessary to sustain themselves and their families.” The MP also distributed meals and goodies to residents, particularly those from underprivileged families.
Vincent Ochieng, one of the youth leaders, thanked the MP for his efforts to empower the families. Ochieng noted that the MP has not only shown love to the families but is also seeking ways to help them.

“This is something we don’t take for granted. You have heard that we will have some of the people taken to VTCs; others will also be sent to driving schools.”
This comes after Oron provided families with packets of wheat flour for Christmas celebrations over the past week.
The MP called on other leaders to do the same and ensure that underprivileged people within their areas are celebrated during such times.
