Learning at the troubled Eldoret City-based Moi University is set to resume on November 4, 2024 after the National Assembly Education Committee made the recommendation as it pushes for its adequate funding.
Committee’s chairperson Tinderet MP Julius Melly, during a special sitting of the National Assembly on October 18, 2024, revealed that the National Treasury had released Ksh609 million this month of October.
According to the MP, the university will also receive an additional Ksh500 million in November, with the funding going a long way to cushion the university.
Melly stated further that a caretaker committee will be constituted to ensure that the institution uses the money responsibly, and further strengthen the management of the university during this recovery period.
However, before the reopening, the university staff will be required to sign a return to work formula after a series of industrial action which has paralyzed learning in the once vibrant university.

“To facilitate the reopening, it is to be noted that staff unions will need to sign a return to work formula to promote consensus and set the stage for reopening and inter-ministerial committee comprising the Ministry of Education, National Treasury and Ministry of Labour,” said Melly.
The committee also directed Moi University to increase revenue from the farm, idle assets, short-term training, consultancies, endowment funds, and research; and also protect the revenue expected from income-generating activities over the next three years.
As far as pending bills go, the university has been directed to negotiate a priority payment plan with staff and creditors, and further pay the current pending bills progressively.
Early this month, lecturers and more than 4,000 workers staged fresh demos in Eldoret City demanding payment of delayed salaries and implementation of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA).
