Imenti South DCC Mary Mwangi has called on the community to take responsibility in eradicating teenage pregnancies.
Addressing a leaders meeting in Mitunguu, the DCC said that the most vulnerable girls are those whose parents are working in the tea-growing zones.
“Don’t say that she is not your daughter because she belongs to those who work as tea pluckers. Those people live in our society and they deserve equal rights and social protection,” she said, regretting that the region is leading in the vice and called on parents and guardians not to shy away from counselling and mentoring the girls.
“We have to fight this war. I have been very vocal about it because I have seen girls aged as young as 11year come to my office carrying babies. When I ask whose baby they are carrying, they say it’s theirs. It is so disheartening,” she said.

The DCC however called on Njuri Ncheke council of elders to join hands in the fight, as they stamp authority in the Ameru community.
“I also urge our respected Njuri Ncheke council of elders to continue with their support towards this exercise. They have been a key pillar in this fight and we want them to help us end this shame,” summed the DCC.
She noted that once the fight is successful, all girls will be able to transit to different levels of education.
On illicit brew, the administrator vowed to ensure all brewing dens are closed in a bid to help put an end to the escalating vice in the society.
“Some of the girls get discouraged because of their alcoholic parents. It’s my prayer that school heads don’t send them away for one reason or another. Instead, counsel them, because when you chase them away, they might get frustrated and in return get pregnant,” she advised.
