Good news for civil servants as HELB unveils education scheme loan

University students engage with HELB staff at a loans counter. HELB has extended its loan facility to civil servants and other State agencies.

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced that all government employees are now eligible for an education loan.

The Jielimishe Loan provides government employees with permanent and pensionable positions up to Ksh600,000 to support their educational advancement.

Moreover, employees of certain private companies are eligible to apply for the loan.

“Do you have a government job? You can get low-interest loans of up to Ksh600,000 with an attractive repayment rate of just 10 per cent annual interest rate,” HELB announced.

Eligible civil servants for the loans include personnel from the National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Employees of both county and national governments across various ministries are also encouraged to apply for the facility, as well as all employees in public commissions.

Public commissions encompass the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Public Service Commission (PSC), Commission on Administrative Justice, Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), and the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA).

Staff members in various parastatals were encouraged to seize the opportunity to further their academic pursuits.

At present, Kenya has 290 parastatals, with prominent examples including the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), and the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), among others.

Lecturers and support staff employed in public universities and academic institutions are also eligible to apply for the loan.

To check if a private company qualifies for the loan, Kenyans should email the company’s name to jielimishe@helb.co.ke.

Undergraduate students seeking to apply for second and subsequent loans are encouraged to use the USSD code *642# for their application.
