Koyonzo Boys retains Western Region rugby 7s championship

The 2023 Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Association (FEASSSA) rugby 7s champions, Koyonzo Boys, have reclaimed their glory by winning the Western Region rugby 7s championship.

Koyonzo secured the title with a commanding 24-07 win against Vihiga Boys at St Peter’s Grounds on Wednesday.

The highly anticipated knockout matches were disrupted on Saturday as referees staged a go-slow, demanding their outstanding payments.

This unforeseen issue halted the proceedings right as the critical knockout stage was about to commence. Up to that moment, 48 matches had already been played in the pool stages.

In a repeat of last year’s Western Region rugby 7s final, Koyonzo was resolute in their quest to claim the title. They controlled the first half, leading Vihiga Boys 12-0.

Although Vihiga made a strong comeback in the second half with a try and a conversion to close the gap to 12-07, Koyonzo’s solid defense and aggressive offense resulted in two additional tries and conversions.

The match concluded with a final score of 24-07, clinching the championship for Koyonzo Boys.

In the girls’ category, Madira Girls played against Mbakalo Girls following a decisive 19-00 semifinal victory over Kimobo.

Despite an appeal challenging their performance, Madira’s win was upheld. In the finals, Madira Girls triumphed with a tough 15-05 win over their rivals, claiming the Western region girls’ title.

Koyonzo, Vihiga, Musing Boys, and St Peters all progressed to the Western Region semifinals following their impressive performances in the quarterfinals.

Musingu clinched their semifinal berth with a 15-5 victory over Kimobo, while St. Peters advanced after Chavakali failed to show up, resulting in a walkover.

Vihiga, who were finalists in the 2023 East African and National tournaments, secured their spot with a hard-fought 19-10 win against Kakamega School.

Koyonzo also made it to the semifinals with a commanding 22-0 win over Kibabii. The Term Two national games will be held in Kisii from Monday, July 29 to Wednesday, August 7. Regional champions Koyonzo and Madira are now aiming for national success.
