Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to reinstate Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers whose contracts were terminated due to their participation in a recent strike.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Mumias Branch, Governor Barasa called on the TSC to reverse its disciplinary actions and offer the affected teachers Permanent and Pensionable employment terms.

“We are asking the TSC to rescind the termination of contracts and recall the 742 letters sent to JSS teachers. The measures taken are very punitive and unacceptable,” he said.

On May 22, the TSC had issued show-cause letters to the striking teachers, who were absent from duty. The letters demanded that the teachers explain their absence within two weeks.

A total of 10,348 teachers received these letters, with 9,606 managing to respond within the stipulated time. However, 742 teachers failed to report back to work and did not provide their whereabouts, leading to the termination of their contracts and their subsequent replacement.
