JSS teachers finally agree to go back to class as return to work formula is reached

JSS teachers have called off their demonstrations and agreed to go back to work as TSC looks into their grievances.

Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers have eventually called off their demonstrations and agreed to go back to class having kept off since the beginning of the term.

In the return to work formula, the teachers are expected to return to work as their pay matter is looked into. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has also agreed to withdraw the show-cause letters that it had served the teachers.

The National Governing Council (NGC) of KUPPET also commended the work of the National Executive Board to lobby for funds to convert the 26,000 intern teachers to Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) terms at a cost of Ksh8.3 billion from July this year.
However, the union reiterated that the funds should cater for hiring of all interns hired by the commission in January 2023, and that the Ksh4.68 billion allocated to the commission should strictly be used for hiring of teachers on PnP terms, and more funds provided for conversion of interns hired in September 2023 to PnP terms.
The union also urged the government to reconsider its earlier decision of domiciling JSS in primary school, noting that the learners are not receiving the quality education as envisioned under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The teachers have been on the streets demanding for PnP terms of employment as advised by the Employment and Labour Relations Court (ELRC).

It is now official that they will be in class from Monday, as the expectation of some of them being offered better terms in July become apparent.
