Secondary school student in Kisii who died by suicide buried in emotional ceremony

Riambase Secondary School student, Doris Onderi, who committed suicide, was laid to rest at Motemomwamu village in Kenyenya Sub-county.

The deceased’s mother said her daughter ended her life immediately after opening school for second term last week.

“Her body was found by her colleagues hanging in a sisal rope from the roof a latrine pit in the school,” she said.

Bokimonge Ward Member of County Assembly Amos Onderi has asked the youth to reveal and share their problems with their parents, teachers and friends.

The MCA who is a professional nurse said the that the mind is like a horse whose speed you can control for the comfort of your travel and asked society to embrace positive thinking in order to live happy life.

The MCA asked parents and teachers to be conversant with the symptoms of suicide in order to help anyone who might fall victim of contemplating suicide.

“People who commit suicide know there are better alternatives but they deliberately decide to end their lives against the desire of God who gave life to man as a sacred gift,” he said.

He asked family members with a person who exhibits such behaviours to be near them and try to offer them better alternatives like showing them love, company and comfort.

According to Judys Nyaboke, a mental health worker, a suicidal person may lose interest in the daily activities, neglect their physical appearance or show big shift in their eating or sleeping habits.

She advised families of persons who may exhibit such negative symptoms not to argue much with them but instead to seek the attention of counselors and psychologists to intervene.

The medic said World Health Organization (WHO) estimated record of one million people who die each year from suicide.
