Junior Secondary School ( JSS) teachers in Bungoma North Sub-county yesterday held demonstrations at the Teachers Service Commission Sub-County Director’s office, urging the national government to employ them on permanent and pensionable terms as per the directive of the Employment and Labour Relations Court (ELRC).
Led by one Johnson Kisindai, the JSS teachers noted that TSC should follow the orders of the Judiciary which has termed the one- year internship as illegal.
According to Kisindai, the teachers have vowed not to go class when schools re-open next week on 6th May 2024 until their grievances are heard.
Elsewhere in Bungoma South Sub-county, the teachers have said that they are going to go on strike just like doctors to demand for their rights.
Led by John Wamalwa and Naomi Khaemba, they said that TSC is taking them for granted and yet they are qualified like other graduates in the country.
KUPPET Bungoma Branch Chairman David Barasa, accompanied by the Secretary-General Augustine Kundu Luketelo, said that they are in solidarity with JSS teachers in their quest for better terms.
Barasa and Luketelo reteirated that many tutors are grappling with challenges in their duty stations like lack of facilities and yet they receive low pay in the name of internship programme.
The two unionists called on President William Ruto to intervene so as to bridge the gap of teacher shortage.
