Equity’s 15th Annual Education and Leadership congresses have begun in earnest in 19 venues across the country under the theme “Educate, Empower, Lead: The Triad to Success”.
In his keynote address to Central Kenya region scholars converged at Baricho High School in Kirinyaga County, Equity Group Finance Director David Ngata stressed the importance of education, empowerment, and leadership.
“Education will help you make informed decisions and choices in life. We urge you to adopt a continuous learning mindset through these kinds of workshops and seminars to enable you to become a complete human being,” said Ngata.
The director further urged the scholars to consistently seek mentorship and apply the knowledge acquired to impact society positively.
“When we support you through education, we expect you to be a change agent by applying the knowledge through volunteer activities and local outreach programmes,” said Ngata, adding that it’s necessary to make specific, meaningful and achievable goals.
Ngata reiterated the importance of empowering scholars, saying it’s critical in helping one control their own destiny and uplift others.
“For successful empowerment, you need a lot of self-reflection, self-awareness and setting of personal boundaries. You must also stay away from negative influences like alcohol and drugs,” said Ngata.
The director voiced Equity’s desire to mould the scholars into influential, visionary and effective leaders of tomorrow.
Kirinyaga University Vice Chancellor (VC) Mary Ndung’u hailed the Wings to Fly and Elimu Scholarship programmes, describing them as game-changers in socio-economic transformation.
“This is the fourth year I’m being involved in this life-changing initiative. One great observation I have made is the outstanding integrity of the Wings to Fly selection process,” said Prof Ndung’u, while emphasizing the critical role mentorship plays in shaping the character and personality of young men and women.
He further called on the scholars to dedicate their time to meaningful goals, visions and missions for the good of society.
The annual mentorship meetings serve as the highlight of the leadership, mentoring, and social transformation programmes run by Equity Group Foundation (EGF) in partnership with The Mastercard Foundation, Ministry of Education, German Government, and other partners.
The series of symposia target 20,527 beneficiaries in Form 3 and 4, and 2,574 refugee scholars in Form 2 across Kenya.
It has so far supported 60,009 scholars in over 2,000 public secondary schools.
