The journey to greatness begins with first step

” Dream Big, Start Small, Begin Now.”  Are among the tenets for record breakers? By Robin Sharma.

The path to destiny is a journey and it all starts somewhere; with a dream, with a burning ambition. It is not a wonder that many dream, but live their dreams unfulfilled. These are those that lead Robin Sharma to say, “Too many of us die at the age of 30 and are buried at 80.” To be counted among record breakers in life, check out the following:

  • Start where you are with what you have

The initiative to start is the determinant. Just like how athletes can never win races that they have not started, the same way you can never be a champion in your area of interest without starting. Winning starts at the beginning as Robin Sharma states. Any time is an opportune time to start. You do not need a bell to start, nor to be signalled to begin. All you need is the deep conviction to start. The problem with many is that they are impatient with the process. They start now and expect immediate results in return there and then. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Just start and use the available to get the unseen.

  • Consistency

Robin Sharma states, “Consistency really is the DNA of mastery. And small, daily seemingly insignificant improvements when done consistently over time yield staggering results.”

I would describe consistency as the daily significant step no matter how small towards your area of interest in life. You do not become a Mathematics Guru by doing plenty of sums in a day to an exam, but by doing a sum in plenty of days before the exam. The small steps that we tend to neglect form part of the necessities to our destiny. Make each day count with a mini-significant stride, if not a stride each day.

  • Perseverance

The Chinese Bamboo that is grown in the Far East is watered and fertilized for four years without the farmer noticing any significant growth. The determined farmer continues with the ritual to the fifth year when in five weeks’ time the tree grows ninety feet in height. The tree grows the ninety feet at the fifth year not because of its rarity, but because of the farmer’s perseverance. Results may not be evident at the moment they are definite. Record breakers sometimes think of giving up but choose never to give in.

  • Overcome failure and obstacles

To history makers, failure is a motivation. Failure gives them a reason to keep moving by trying again and again. It’s commonly said, “If you want to succeed, double your failure rate.”

Robin Sharma goes further and expounds that “What makes the best best is not genetics but their habits.” Make it a habit to rise up after a fall, dust off and keep going. Bounce back better from failure.

  • Be among the 5 per cent that do what 95 per cent avoid doing

Simply, when others are sitting, stand, when others are standing, stand out, when others are standing out, be the standard.

Finally, consider the wise words of Ayn Rand: “Do not allow your fire to go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not at all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists. It is real. It is possible. It is yours.”
