Nyong’o praises media council for opening centres countrywide

Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has lauded the Media Council of Kenya for opening media hubs across the country.

Media houses, he said, are laying off staff as they downsize due to harsh economic times and rapidly changing consumer behaviour.

Nyong’o said such centres would go a long way in enhancing the performance of journalists in the areas concerned.

The governor said the journalism world is undergoing a major transformation with digital content taking root at a very fast pace.

Nyong’o added that the media hubs and digital content production centres would help journalists to be more creative and have more avenues for selling their stories.

The head of county said it is exciting to note that the Council is opening centres as a way of supporting journalists, media practitioners and independent content creators to harness their efforts in undertaking their duties for professional enhancement.

The governor advised journalists to devise survival tactics.

Speaking in Kisumu during the opening of a media hub indicated that the centre would enhance the performance of media personalities in the region.

“As a writer myself and a great consumer of news, I have closely been following the happenings in the media sector and I am happy with what the media council is doing,” said Nyong’o. “In the meantime, the media must continue fighting for more press freedom by strengthening its institutions.”

As head of counties, Nyong’o said, they are ready to continue collaborating with the council to help it improve and sustain the standards of journalism, especially on accuracy and the war against fake news.

Governor Nyong’o said the launch of the centres has increased the number of the many interventions the Council has done in the recent past to improve the performance of the Media Industry in Kenya.
