The national government has increased fees and levies charged for various services offered by the Interior Ministry, including the processing of birth certificates.
Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki, in a memo dated February 29, 2024, indicated that the implantation of the charges takes effect after public participation was conducted from November 14 to December 5, 2023.
The CS indicated that the date for implementation of the charges was January 1, 2024. However, the said charges were to be subjected to public participation before taking effect.
“The purpose of this circular is therefore to inform you that with effect from March 1, 2024, the revised fees, charges and levies take effect and all our services will be charged accordingly,” the CS said.
Consequently, late registration of birth certificates will now cost Ksh500 from Ksh150, the same as late registration of death.
The government has also increased fees for re-registration of birth from Ksh90 to Ksh1,000 and fees for registration of births in foreign missions from $50 (Ksh7,225) to $150 (Ksh21,675).
Charges for amendments to both birth and death certificates were increased from Ksh130 to Ksh1,000 while fees for a certificate for a person presumed dead was increased from Ksh150 to Ksh1,500.
Kenyans applying for an identification card (ID), which was free, will now pay Ksh300. It will also cost you Ksh1,000 to replace a lost ID card up from Ksh100.
The govt also raised charges for new passports by 75 per cent. For an ordinary passport with 34 pages, which was previously Ksh4,500, a new applicant will have to pay Ksh7,500.
For the 50-page one, one will part with Ksh9,500 from Ksh6,000, while a passport booklet with 66 pages will cost Ksh12,500 from Ksh7,500.
One will have to pay Ksh20,000 from Ksh12,000 and Ksh10,000 to replace a lost and mutilated passport respectively, while an express passport will cost Ksh30,000.
Permanent residents for Kenyan children born outside the country and in countries which do not allow dual citizenship will pay Ksh750,000 from the current Ksh500,000, while spouses of Kenya citizens will part with Ksh150,000 from Ksh50,000.
Verification of certificate for private (Kenyan) agencies will cost Ksh500, while for private (foreign) will cost US $100.
