Do not lock learners out of school for lack of fees, senior govt officer tells heads

Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjao addressing the media after a thanksgiving service at the ACK St Thomas in Kerugoya. She asked schools not to send children away for lack of fees.

Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjao has urged school managements in the country not to lock learners out of school for lack of fees for the government’s education agenda to be achieved.

Speaking after a thanksgiving ceremony at the ACK St Thomas Cathedral, Wanjao said there should be an amicable model where parents pay fees to schools in an agreed predetermined arrangement.

“I urge school managements not to send learners who lack school fees home. Parents and school heads need to agree on modes of fees payments and the heads should listen to parents,” she said.

She also revealed that the government is sourcing for jobs abroad and Kenyans must be prepared by acquiring the requisite skills.

She said this amid difficulties for parents in the region to keep their children in school due to demands from schools to pay up before children can join others in class.

A school in Mwea West for instance asked them to pay Ksh1,600 for a tracksuit and Ksh4,500 for lunch for Junior Secondary School.
