Kisii Women leaders have called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to assure parents of their girls’ safety amid the increasing cases of murder of female students in Universities across the country.

While speaking in Kisii town, Ford Kenya party Branch Secretary Mary Kerubo expressed fear for female students who will join Universities in September this year, saying that innocent girls from secondary schools might fall victim.

“I ask the Ministry of Education to introduce a new method of orientation for First Year students that emphasizes on security for the sake of survival,” she said.

Her concerns come two weeks after a second-year Nursing student at the University of East Africa Baraton, Brenda Kipkurui, was found lifeless in her room.

Kerubo cited other femicide cases in the country including; Rita Waeni, 20, a Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture Science and Technology (JKUAT) student who was murdered and dismembered in an Airbnb apartment in Nairobi mid-January; Starlet Wahu whose body was found bleeding in another Airbnb; and a Gusii National Polytechnic student who was found dead at Jogoo Estate.

The Branch secretary asked Universities to construct enough hostels within their premises, adding that these incidents could have been contained if the students were staying in hostels within the institution.

Baraton University student leader James Wanyonyi confirmed Brenda’s incident, adding that White Crescent Hospital, Kapsabet performed a postmortem revealing that she died of natural causes.
