Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to refrain from terminating the employment of teachers in the North Eastern region, grappling with security challenges.
Closing the 63rd Annual Delegates Conference at Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, Gachagua asserted that the government acknowledges the security issues in the area.
He emphasized that Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki is firmly directed to restore security in the region.
Gachagua empathized with teachers confronting insecurity, asserting that they should not face victimization for prioritizing their safety.
Recently, TSC took disciplinary action against nearly 200 non-local teachers who hesitated to return to the volatile North due to safety concerns.
The commission initiated disciplinary proceedings on Monday, with over 20 teachers expected to appear before various panels throughout the week.
In response to the situation, the Kenya Teachers in Arid and Semi-Arid Welfare Association (KETHAWA) extended legal support through a group of lawyers on December 3, 2023.
As tensions persist, the fate of these educators remains uncertain pending the outcomes of their disciplinary hearings.
