Deputy President assures intern teachers top priority for employment

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has assured teachers who are currently on internships that they will be given top priority when it comes to employment by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

During his speech at the 63rd KNUT annual delegates conference held at Kasarani Sports Center, he stated that the TSC will prioritize converting these internships into permanent and pensionable positions during the recruitment process.

He emphasized that this program was a deliberate strategy to address the shortage of teachers and create employment opportunities within the allocated budget.

“We have intentionally placed some teachers on internships while others are on permanent and pensionable terms, but I want to assure you that they will be given first priority during the recruitment process,” he stated.

The Deputy President also highlighted that the government had employed a record-breaking 56,000 teachers within the first financial year, which is a significant achievement since the country gained independence.

“We are also planning to hire over 116,000 more teachers to bridge the existing gap,” Gachagua added.

He expressed his gratitude to KNUT for maintaining a peaceful and harmonious relationship with the government, assuring that there would be no strikes as they are open to discussions and willing to address the concerns of the teachers.

“The President and I are approachable and humble. Because of this, I am confident that during our term in office, there will be no strikes because we will engage in discussions and reach agreements on any issues,” he affirmed.

Furthermore, he assured that the government has informed the TSC that no teacher working in areas affected by insecurity would be dismissed for seeking safety.

“We cannot terminate the employment of someone who is running for their life. Our government is deeply concerned, and we have implemented sufficient measures to ensure their safety,” he concluded.
