Raila links exam irregularities with corruption in the ministry

Opposition leader Raila Odinga

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has asserted that corruption led to irregularities in the 2023 KCPE results, attributing them to procurement conflicts within the Education Ministry.

In a statement today, Odinga noted that there were complaints about Kiswahili marks misalignment with Kenyan sign language for some candidates who didn’t take the subject.

“There were also allegations that all candidates in a certain school scored 75 marks in the science subject,” he added.

Additionally, he called upon the Director of Criminal Investigations and EACC to conduct thorough investigations.

The opposition leader further urged other institutions and stakeholders, including religious institutions and KNUT, to advocate for integrity.

Odinga recalled the 2016 hiring of a UK firm to print exams due to concerns about exam integrity.

However, he argued that the tender was terminated by the Kenya Kwanza government as the UK company refused kickbacks.

Subsequently, a Mombasa Road-based company, lacking capacity, outsourced printing to an Indian company, causing discrepancies in results.

“The SMS short codes for grading differed from recorded school data, and some candidates were graded for exams they didn’t sit,” he stated.

Odinga warns that Ministry of Education tender conflicts could impact upcoming KCSE exams.

Expressing concern, he cited evidence supporting claims and urges stakeholders to safeguard exam integrity.

Odinga demanded a thorough investigation into the Mombasa Road-based company’s tender award and transparency in the process.
