The Senate Committee on Trade and Tourism has commenced a probe into a case where teachers lost Ksh300 Million to Metropolitan National Sacco.

While in Bungoma on Saturday at Mabanga ATC to get views from teachers who were conned, the committee led by Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah said they will summon Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Cooperatives Simon Chelugui, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia, and the top leadership of KUSCCO to shed light on how the teachers were swindled.

The senators told the press that they have summoned the three to appear before the house committee next week.

In his address, the committee Chair and Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah stated that they expect them to show steps to be taken to recover the money from the embattled Sacco.

“We have listened to how these teachers are suffering. As agreed we are going to ensure that those who disappeared with the teachers’ money are held accountable,” Omtatah said.

Accompanied by Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli, Omtatah expressed regret that Bungoma teachers were unable to retrieve their millions of savings from the Sacco, vowing to leave no stone unturned.

The teachers present who are members of the Sacco narrated how the Sacco has refused to release their money.

The teachers also accused TSC of working with the Sacco even after they submitted a withdrawal letter to the Commission.

“We blame the TSC too because the time we saw things not going as expected we sought to withdraw from the Sacco but the Commission still remitted our money to the Sacco,” said one of the teachers.

They also said that they were turned away whenever they wanted loans.

The committee directed TSC to stop remitting money to the Sacco as members had expressed their intention to withdraw, promising to have reached the bottom of the matter within 21 days.
