Kenya Association of Technical Institutions (KATTI) National Chairman David Mwangi has said that operations in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across the country risk grinding to a halt due to a crash crunch caused by the government’s delay to remit much-needed capitation funds.

Speaking during a recent meeting between TVET Permanent Secretary (PS) Esther Muoria and TVET and TTI heads at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu, he noted that if the cash crisis continues further, the institutions will be forced to suspend co-curricular activities to concentrate on CBET and KNEC matters.

Mwangi noted that most TVET institutions have been operating on shoe-string budgets for the better part of last year and this year, with most of them being unable to pay workers who have been engaged by Boards and Councils while others are now at the mercy of suppliers.

The Chairman called on TVET heads to maximize what they currently have especially collecting tuition fees.

PS Muoria appealed for calm and said that the money was due to be released to various institutions very soon.

“The money is about to be released. I know this since I have signed for it,” she said.

PS Muoria also reiterated the assurance in Siaya where she met heads of area TVET institutions for two hours.
