Nyanza Regional Director of Education Nelson Sifuna has assured parents that all Kisumu Boys High School students are safe including those who sustained minor injuries and that they are carrying on with their studies.
This is after a fire broke out at the school on Sunday evening ravaging a dormitory and a store.
“This is the third term when students are preparing for examinations to move to the next level, so they cannot be sent home,” added Sifuna.
The fire, which initially started at a storage area for mattresses, swiftly spread to an adjoining dormitory affecting 260 students.
He lauded the quick response from students, teachers and support staff who assisted in rescuing casualties and students’ belongings.
Firefighters from the Kisumu County Government and Kibos Sugar Factory successfully doused the flames.
Kisumu County Commissioner Hussein Alassow assured the public that investigations into the incident were already underway.
“The DCI team has kicked off investigations into this matter and at the moment it is still too early to say what caused the fire,” he said.
The incident marks the third school fire since 2022 with previous incidents attributed to electrical malfunction.
Despite this, the school administration noted that it remains steadfast in its commitment to providing a conducive learning environment for its students, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus during this crucial term.
