Nyamira County launches policy to protect children against abuse

Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo.

The County Government of Nyamira has launched the Children’s Policy in a bid to protect children from negligence by parents, defilement, malnutrition, and child labour.

While addressing residents at Uhuru Gardens, Governor Amos Nyaribo called on parents to support the policy to uphold children’s rights and ensure the holistic development of children in the county.

“There can be no future without children and that is why my government has launched the policy to ensure the progress of the community,” he said.

With concern, he noted that cases of kidnapping and child defilement in the region were on the rise and urged parents, churches and the Nyumba Kumi to support the Policy so as to ensure the safe development of the child in a cohesive society.

The meeting was attended by the County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatta who termed the launch as timely.

“We need to come out strongly and condemn child abuse,” he said.

Kyatta cited a recent incident where a man, 75, allegedly impregnated a 16-year-old schoolgirl.

He said his office had begun investigations on the matter and promised severe punishment for the alleged offender.
