I will sack all protesting ECDE teachers, Arati warns

Kisii County Governor Simba Arati has threatened to sack over 950 Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers who had earlier given notice of holding protests on September 14.

The teachers had written to the Police notifying them of the impending demos against the county government over increment of salaries and poor work conditions.

Speaking while addressing residents at his Kisii Stadium offices, Arati said that the strike will punish innocent pupils and asked the teachers to engage the relevant county department instead.

“Weigh carefully the channel you want to express your grievances. You are allowed to demonstrate but know that there are people who will not hesitate to take over your jobs. Remember that choices have consequences,” he said.

He noted that the teachers had raised their grievances through the County Service Board but it was dissolved before the issue was resolved.

The Governor asked the teachers remain patient until the board is reconstituted to look into their grievances, adding that his government was prepared to support the ECDE sector.

“At this time we cannot respond to their grievances, not until the Board is put in place. The only alternative for them now is to continue working,” he said.
