Students want Govt to explain the new funding model

TVET

The Secretary-General TVET Students Association Caleb Bii now want the government to come clear on what percentage parents are expected to pay in the new university and TVETs funding model.

He said the government’s move to hike higher education fees will disadvantage many students who will in turn drop out due to the high cost of living.

“Now that the government through the Ministry of Education has hiked the school fees, we would want to know the amount that the government will pay and the amount expected to be paid by the parents with this rising and tough economy in the country”, said the secretary general.

Secretary-General further urged the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) CEO Charles Ringera to expedite the loan processes so that they can get the funds on time to cater for their school fees.

“We want to ask Mr Ringera to kindly release Helb loans as fast as possible now that the government has decided to hike the fees, we need these loans to help us.” Added Caleb.

He also called on the government to explain the criteria expected to be used to identify the needy students who will receive the HELB loan.

“We would want to know which criteria the government is going to use to disperse the loans to the less fortunate because not all orphans are needy and not all students who have both parents alive are fortunate, “said the SG.
