500,000 youths to benefit from NGO education sponsorship to TVETs

NGO SPONSORSHIP

Hundreds of youths across the country are now set to benefit from an education scheme that has been rolled out by a community-based organization.

The soccer ball and start Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) Chief executive officer Mr.  Kennedy Odede said at the weekend that his organization targets to assist youths who have completed formal education but are unskilled.

Odede said in Kisumu that he will target some 500,000 youths in the program where the school leavers will be sponsored to take various courses in TVET institutions.

The CEO said in Kisumu, he intends to work with 20,000 youths in the envisaged program.

Odede who spoke after elections of SHOFCO sub-branch officials said he will be working with members of the provincial administration in order to avoid duplication of roles and duties.

He said they will also work with both county and sub-county officials to avoid the same.

Odede lamented that many youths have engaged in drug abuse due to idleness.

He said the young people should not be blamed for the vices but should instead be assisted.

Recounting his past Odede said he grew up in Kenya’s Kibera slum, the largest slum in Africa, where he experienced the devastating realities of life in extreme poverty firsthand.

At age ten, he said, he became a street child but still dreamt about changing his community.

‘In 2004, he had a job in a factory earning $1 for ten hours of work. He saved 20 cents and used this to buy a soccer ball and start Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO). ‘ he said.
