All Secondary School students who applied for the County Education Fund in Nyamira have benefitted from the county’s fund basket for needy students.
Speaking at Nyamira town, the County Education Fund Chairman Bennes Benecha said that more than Sh 100 million was distributed equitably to the applicants depending on the needy weight of their applications.
Benecha who doubles as the Member of County Assembly (MCA)for Kiabonyoru ward said that the total orphans received sh.5000 while those with both parents from poor homes received shillings 3500 each.
He asked the beneficiaries’ parents to check with the offices of their respective wards and area chiefs to confirm their applications.
The MCA said the cheques of students who learn in schools within Nyanza region were sent directly to the school accounts while those who study in schools outside the region can collect the cheques and take them to their respective schools.
“Some schools outside Nyanza region had one to three applicants and we saw it convenient to hand the cheques to the individuals to deliver them to their schools.”He said.
Nyamira County Governor said his office had planned to support 500 students from poor backgrounds every year to enable them to complete their secondary education.
“We realized education is the only sure way of economic balance to our people and decided to support it.”Said the governor.
He asked the committees in charge of the kitty to be transparent and accountable.
“Anybody who will be found misusing the money will be dismissed from the committee and arraigned in court for corruption.”He said.
The Governor asked church leaders and other education stakeholders to monitor the progress of the fund because it is a public utility from the taxpayers’ money that should be handled with integrity.
He also asked the beneficiaries to work hard at school in order to realize their dreams in the future.
He asked them to remain focused on their education instead of indulging in drug abuse and other related vices.
