Kakamega County pledges to return school’s 2 acres of land

Kakamega

The Kakamega County Government has pledged to return a 2-acre piece of land back to St. Mary’s Mumias Girls High School.

Governor Fernandes Barasa said that the process to return ownership of the land adjacent to the school located in Mumias town would be concluded in two weeks.

The institution has been fighting to reclaim the land which was taken over by the county government and made part of the Mumias Triangle in 2013.

“The school acquired this land way back in 1984 but it was taken away by the county government without any reasons. We have made countless appeals to the county government to reclaim our land for recreation by students but in vain. This has negatively impacted on expansion of St. Mary’s Mumias Girls,” said Catholic Diocese of Kakamega Bishop Joseph Obanyi.

While addressing students and parents during the school’s Golden Jubilee celebrations on Wednesday, Barasa noted that the school was among the top ones in the county and that they will allocate Ksh20 million towards construction of a new multi-purpose hall at the institution.

He added that they will fully sponsor students from the school who score plain A’s in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

The Governor stated that the county government had increased bursary allocation from Ksh2 million per Ward to Ksh4 million beginning next month.

He said that the county government was committed towards quality hygiene in all schools to avert health crises similar to the one that struck Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High claiming the life of a teacher and three learners.
