More than 2,000 medical interns are relieved after the Ministry of Health announced the release of their posting letters.
This puts an end to the long wait and prolonged tussle between the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers and the Ministry of Health over the delayed posting of the interns which was supposed to take place last year December.
As per the new directive, the interns will be expected to collect their letters beginning Thursday as they wait to report to their stations on July 1.
“After a push and pull to have our interns posted since December last year, we are happy to announce affirmatively that a total of 2,516 (BSC 506, DIP 1,930) shall start picking their letters for their internships,” Kenya Union of Clinical Officers SG George Gibore said.
The breakthrough comes after a series of meetings between the union officials and the Ministry leadership, with the Principal Secretary (PS) for Public Health and Standards Mary Muthoni in the last meeting, committing to ensure the affected interns receive their letters.
The Peterson Wachira-led union had issued an ultimatum earlier this month to the Ministry and threatened to take to the streets should their demands remain unmet.
The Ministry is supposed to post clinical officers on internship which is a legal provision and a prerequisite for them so they are licensed to practice.
