Parents urged to protect their children against sexual exploitation

Kyeleni Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Grace Bahati has urged parents to be more active in protecting children from sexual exploitation.

Speaking during the commemoration of the Day of the African Child in Kinyui location on Friday, Ms. Bahati, who is also the Committee in charge of Education Chair, asked the government to initiate more policies to tackle early pregnancies among schoolgirls.

She attributed the pregnancies among schoolgirls to poverty and lack of role models and information on the importance of avoiding premarital sex.

The MCA said that the government needs to equip children officers and lobby groups with resources to detect, prevent and respond to children abuse.

She noted that responsive measures such as public awareness were crucial to preventing such occurrences.

Ms. Bahati also called on parents in the county to support measures aimed at improving education standards, saying that quality education was one of the most effective tools in the fight against deep rooted poverty in the region.
