Low enrolment of adult learners in Adult Literacy Centres in Mombasa county has been attributed to lack of required facilities and materials.
Speaking to Education News from Mombasa town recently, the county Director of Adult Education, Mr. Franklin Karanja said that the Directorate of Adult Education has no classrooms of its own thus relies heavily on primary school classrooms and Mosques, some of which are not suitable for adult learners.
He further noted that un-conducive learning environments discourage adult learners not to attend their daily lessons.
Karanja urged adult education stakeholders to equip literacy centres with modern learning facilities to provide a conducive environment, hence raise enrolment of the learners.
He also urged parents to encourage their children who dropped out of school to enroll into literacy centres to continue their education.
