All secondary school principals through the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) will converge in Mombasa starting in June for their annual conference.

In a notice published in one of the dailies on May 19, 2023, KESSHA National Chairman Kahi Indimuli noted that the conference will be held in Mombasa from June 26 to 30 with the National Governing Council (NGC) meeting being held on June 25, 2023.

“Notice is hereby given to all members of Kenya Secondary School Heads Association that the 2023 Annual National Conference of Principals will be held from 26th -30th June 2023 at the Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa,” read the notice.

“There will be a National Governing Council Meeting on Sunday 25th June 2023 at Bahari Beach Hotel-Mombasa starting from 2 p.m. Online registration is ongoing for members,” the notice added.

This comes after the association requested the Ministry of Education through a letter dated March 26, 2023 to reschedule the midterm dates for the second term which will now start from June 27, 2023 to July 1, 2023 since the current scheduled dates coincided with the dates of KESSHA 46th Annual National Conference.

Initially, the MoE scheduled the half-term dates to start from June 29, 2023 to July 2, 2023.

Among the issues that are being expected to dominate this year’s conference themed, “Enhancing effectiveness and efficiency of education in Kenya” include congestion in schools, student health, capitation and infrastructure.

Public secondary schools are currently struggling with infrastructure crisis caused by high enrollment under the government’s 100 per cent transition policy from primary to secondary schools.

It is a tough balancing act for principals who have to improvise to accommodate the high number of Form Ones with some schools seeing a single stream taking up to 80 learners.

After the KESSHA conference, the African Confederation of Principals Conference will follow from August 29 to 31, 2023 in Esibayeni, Matsapha in Swaziland with the theme being, ‘Achieving Sustainable Quality Education in Africa’.

The International Confederation of Principals Council meeting will thereafter be held in September at Lapland in Finland.

Kenya hosted the 10th African Confederation of Principals Conference in August 2018 where Indimuli was handed over the leadership role of the African Confederation of Principals for a two-year term and is set to hold another International Confederation of Principals in 2024.
