Samburu teachers ask MPs to reject salary cut towards housing project

Samburu MPs

Teachers in Samburu County have urged their Members of Parliament (MPs) to reject the government’s plan to deduct civil servants 3 per cent of their salaries towards the national housing project.

The teachers, in their letter to the clerk of national assembly, through the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) state that if the proposal goes through, they will be overburdened.

“We are telling our members of parliament to reject this bill. The cost of living is unbearable and any additional levy on teachers’ payslips amounts to the slow killing of teachers,” reads the letter signed by the Union branch Executive Secretary William Lengoiyap.

The teachers noted that they were not consulted before the decision was made as required by the constitution, and further urged the government to consult further and look for other sources of funds.

“Public participation contributes to better decisions because there is sufficient information, in form of additional facts, values and perspectives obtained through input from diverse members of the public,” said Lengoiyap.

“We urge the government to consult further and look for other sources of funds and leave alone the already overburdened teachers. It is for this and many more reasons that our teachers register their displeasure on this unwarranted levy on their pay,” he added.
