Machogu lauds Irish govt supporting youth with interest in science

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Ezekiel Machogu, has thanked Ireland for supporting young Kenyans with interest in science and technology education in an initiative doubled Young Scientists Kenya.

Machogu made the remarks when the Ambassador of Ireland to Kenya, Ms Fionnuala Quinlan, paid a courtesy call on the CS at his Jogoo House office yesterday.

He said learners have enormous talents and potential which YSK’s exposure could develop in ways that benefits them and the country.

Quinlan on the other hand said her government supported its youth through BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, doubled the Young Scientist Exhibition – an Irish annual school students’ science competition.

“Young Scientist exhibition encourages young people not to see science as scaring but exciting,” Quinlan said.

In attendance was the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang who said the experience should enable the participants to develop a lifelong interest in science as a discipline and a tool for solving problems in society.

Young Scientists Kenya is a unique platform for young people to demonstrate their innovation and showcase their scientific talents. It is a joint venture between the Ministry of Education and the Government of Ireland through its Kenyan Embassy in Nairobi.

Since its insemination, it has provided a platform for secondary school students to compete and showcase practical solutions to the problems faced within their communities.

The winners will take part in the Irish annual school students’ science competition in Dublin, Ireland.
