Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Principal Secretary Esther Muoria has revealed that the government is planning to introduce a new funding model for TVETs to be effective once the Presidential Working Party for Education Reforms submits its report.
“The President (William Ruto) will soon meet Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) and university heads and announce a new funding model. The figure will be enhanced by almost twice,”Muoria said during a meeting with TVET heads and their deputies at the Pride Inn Flamingo Beach Resort & Spa.
She also promised to push for establishment of a management body for TVETs that may be named the Trainers’ Council.
Muoria also called for the politicians not to interfere with the running of the institutions, saying some of them reject principals posted to their areas.
At the same time, KATTI has lamented of the failure of the government to release capitation for the third and fourth quarters, as they said, majority of the institutions are grappling with a deficit of Ksh 4.7 billion. As a result, they said, they are now having huge debts.
“Principals are not comfortable. They cannot sit in their offices because their institutions have incurred debts. If we do not get funds in May, we might differ sports and other activities,” KATTI Chairman, David Mwangi said.
