Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has opposed the government’s proposal to deduct 3 per cent of teachers’ salary from their pay slips.
Speaking at Sio Secondary school on Wednesday, KUPPET Bungoma County Chairman David Barasa said that teachers are already overtaxed and warned of retaliation if the government effects the plan.
“The government should stop joking with our pay slips. As unionists, we won’t agree and allow the government to pin the teachers down,” the Unionist affirmed.
Barasa added that every teacher has their own home and no one is willing to be taxed to fund the State’s housing plan.
The unionist however noted that the government has started a new saving scheme, the Public Service Superannuation Scheme (PSSS), calling on teachers to join and save for their families.
“The importance of this scheme is that a beneficiary can get their money even if they resign from teaching,” he said.
He said that teachers from the entire region have been sensitized on how the PSSS saving scheme works.
To avoid waterborne disease outbreaks in learning institutions, Further, Barasa asked schools’ Boards of Management to desist from sinking boreholes without engaging qualified water experts to curb outbreaks of waterborne diseases.
