Former Governor Aspirant for Taita Taveta, Stephen Mwakesi, has called upon the youth in his county to join colleges and vocational training Institutions in order to gain skills that will enable them earn a living.

Speaking during a church service at ACK St. Philips Mlundinyi church in Ndome, Ngolia ward, Mwakesi noted that the cases of drug abuse in Taita Taveta County are on the rise in both the rural and urban areas, stating that there is a need for the youths to be engaged by joining training institutions which will reduce idleness and pressure groups in the society from which the youths engage in the use of drugs.

“As parents, let’s be responsible. When our children finish secondary schools, we should not leave them alone. Let’s take them to colleges or Vocational Training Institutions where they can be engaged. That’s the only way we can fight the increased case of drug abuse in our villages and the county at large,” Said Mwakesi.

He urged the county government and leaders in the County to find ways of creating job opportunities and engaging with the youths in a way to reduce idleness that has been attributed to cause increased drug abuse by the youths in the county.

Further, Mwakesi urged the county leadership and the community at large to take their youths to National Youth Services (NYS) where apart from training, they will have avoided peer groups that would otherwise make them engage in drug abuse and end up ruining their lives.

“I urge the county government and all the leaders to come up with ways that we can engage with our youths and find solutions to creating jobs so that we can give them a way to deliver themselves from this menace of drug abuse,” he said.
