Governor’s bag of goodies to school at annual thanksgiving ceremony

The Governor of Kitui County has promised to give Matinyani Boys High School a structural facelift as the institution supports majorly 99 per cent of the students from Kitui County.

During a thanksgiving event that was marked with pomp and colour that saw over 4,000 people in attendance, the governor, Dr. Julius Makau Malombe said he will construct a modern administration block and promised to sort out water challenges at the school.

The governor also officially commissioned the school’s footbridge constructed at an approximated cost of Shs 8 million. He also opened the new tuition blocks that are being developed in parts.

Dr. Malombe motivated the school’s 2022 class present, the current students, teachers and the support staff for a job well done in last year’s performance and challenged them to improve on the current mean score.

Malombe is an old student of Matinyani Boys High School.

The school principal, Nelson Muriithi, on his part said the school was proud to host the celebrations together with Kitui Catholic Diocese.

“This time we celebrate the mass with the Kitui Catholic Diocese. We thank God for the many blessings in our school. The reason as to why we do the Thanksgiving Day we look at the school’s academic performance, infrastructure and our relationship with the immediate community in order to enhance partnerships,” he said, adding that they bring the education stakeholders to support the school in its development agenda.

According to the principal, the school that was started by community in 1950 and picked up as a secondary school in 1966 is currently boasting of a total population of 1,321 students, 32 teachers employed by Teachers Service Commission (TSC), 18 employed by Board of Management (BOM) and 21 support staff.

“There is an upward improvement in academic performance from 6.2 mean score in 2017 to 9.94 mean score in 2022 with 100 per cent transition to university,” Muriithi said.

The school emerged the best in the Ukambani region (Kitui, Machakos and Makueni Counties) in the Kenya’s 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) national examination.

The schools mean score in 2022 KCSE was 9.94 with the entry being 240 where they got some 35 A-, 156 B + and 49 B plains.

The Matinyani Boys Secondary School is an Extra-County School and the majority of the school’s students are from Kitui County, according to Muriithi.

Those present and who also addressed the event included; the sponsor, Kitui Catholic Diocesan Bishop, the Right Reverend Joseph Mwongela, Kitui West Constituency MP Edith Vethi Nyenze, Kitui County Women’s Representative, Dr. Irene M. Kasalu, Kitui County Senator, Enock Kiio Wambua and Matinyani Member of County Assembly Sylvester Munyalo.

The school’s immediate former BOM Chairperson Nicholas Mulila also addressed the occasion. He is the Chief Risk and Security Officer at Safaricom.
