Members of Universities’ Academic Staff Union from Moi University have issued a work boycott notice to their employer following delayed salaries and failure to implement the agreed Collective Bargain Approach (CBA).
Speaking to the press, the members blamed their employers for holding the previous month’s salaries.
“From April 5, 2023, we will boycott work until our payments are done. It is sad that today our members have not received their February salaries. The workers have made several attempts to get the payments of salaries be done on time, unfortunately the university has not honored this commitment to pay salaries,” Said Busolo Wekesa, Secretary General UASU Moi University branch.
They blamed the institution for failing to honor the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed between the university and the respective unions which clearly stated what they would qualify for.
“Moi University is fond of paying salaries late, we are in a situation where we are also being underpaid, because we are not being paid as per the CBA that was signed between the universities and the unions,” added Busolo.
The workers gave their employers an ultimatum that if not implemented would force them to down their tools and not report to work citing the various challenges they face on a day to day basis trying to meet what is required of them.
“We will not be able to report to our places of work by the 5th of the following month until our money is paid. As workers we are entitled to payment of salaries on time, which is what the labor law says. The main campus being 35 kms away from Eldoret towns, most of the workers reside in Eldoret town and the workers are forced to raise fares on daily,” Busolo noted.
Dr. Okello Richard, chairman UASU Moi University chapter urged students to seek alternative means of getting services since they will not repot to work.
