Manyatta Member of Parliament, Gitonga Mukunji, has said that he is preparing a bill to have a review of the National Government -Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) law so that students can be able to get bursaries appropriately.
Mukunji stated that the law has not been fair to constituencies in terms of allocation and observed that only one man one shilling formula will address the gap that has been there in terms of allocation.
The first term MP noted, that there are constituencies which have bigger populations and yet they receive the same allocation with those which are not highly populated.
“We cannot have a constituency with 170 schools with a population of 20,000 students and another constituency with 1,000 students be allocated the same, I am considering moving a bill to change NG-CDF law to have one man one shilling,” said Mukunji.
About 7,793 needy students have benefited from Sh36 million Manyatta NG-CDF bursaries to support their education.
The funds were issued to students in tertiary institutions, secondary and Primary schools in the constituency today, March 10, 2023.
While issuing the bursary cheques to the beneficiaries at Kairuri grounds in Embu North, the legislator said that his plan is to see all students acquire education to better their lives.
”Our agenda for education is immeasurable, our priority is to see needy students be in a position to learn and keep them in school,” he added.
Mukunji however lamented that the bursary was just a drop in the ocean especially considering the tough economic times being witnessed in the country.
He said that the bursaries were allocated with the highest transparency and the cheques had been given to the highest deserving students.
School Principals and parents said the disbursement is a major boost towards student retention.
