Machogu tells off critics over preparation in public JSSs

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Hon. Ezekiel Machogu has assured Kenyans that the level of preparedness in public Junior Secondary Schools (JSSs) across the country is satisfactory.

Hon. Machogu said that as the Ministry tackles 100 per cent transition through a multi-agency approach, only 15,640 learners (4%) are yet to be registered for Grade 7 under JSS.

“I want to urge all Kenyans to be patient as the learners are in transition and to avoid panicking as the government is fully prepared. The information going round depicting learning in public JSS as inferior to private JSS is not true,” said the CS.

The CS made the remarks today in Kisii County where he is leading the multi-agency team in a mop up exercise to achieve complete transition for Grade 7 and Form 1.

He noted that evaluation of 2022 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) examination results showed that public schools did very well.

“This is a clear indication that learning in our public schools meet the quality assurance and standards like any other learning institution,” added the CS.

Machogu said capitation for public JSS will be released any time from today as registration of learners has been done to ascertain those who have already reported to each school.

“Every learner has been allocated Ksh 15,042 for capitation and all the public schools will be facilitated as per the number of learners who have been enrolled” he assured.

Machogu appealed to all the education officials, elected leaders, and the administrators to work together to ensure no learner stays at home for whatever reason.

He said uniform is not an issue to keep learners away from school and asked the head teachers to accommodate learners as the parents make arrangements to purchase new uniform for their children.

On Form 1 enrolment, the CS said 91% of learners have reported to secondary schools across the country as per yesterday.

He said parents who are challenged financially should take their children to the nearest day secondary schools where school fees is fully catered for by the government.
