MCA blames commuting head teachers for poor KCSE, KCPE performance

By Agnes Orang’o

Matungulu Member of County Assembly (MCA) has blamed poor performance in national examinations by primary and secondary schools in the ward to commuting of head teachers from Nairobi.

Speaking at Kisukioni Grounds on Friday, Raphael Nzau Lucky said that this makes the teacher arrive late and leave early thus leaves little time with the students.

The lawmaker observed that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should either ensure these teachers stop commuting and settle near the schools or find teachers from the area who will have more time to indulge students.

“There is a school called Muusini Primary school where the head teacher comes from Nairobi every morning to school. With all the traffic jam he tries to beat does he really have time with the pupils? Even the other teachers are not taking their work seriously because they know their boss’s timeline. We are being robbed and being robbed doesn’t mean money or property even your time can be stolen,” he said.

He added: “We are not against these teachers but we are looking for the value of our money. These teachers are spending very little time in school. We have bright kids but if the teachers are not committed then we are doomed. Katulu Primary school also has the same problem and that is the reason why I am insisting.”

The area Deputy County Commissioner Evelyn Wekesa promised to liaise with the TSC office to ensure the matter is handled.

“Posting of teachers is done by TSC and are independent but because we work together we will ensure these issues are handled,” said Wekesa.
