Kaelo Technical and Vocational College recently held its inaugural career day at the institution’s ground, an event that was attended by dignitaries across various sectors.

The institution’s principal Cecilia Mwongera said the institution has an enrollment of 387 students and the population is expected to double with the ongoing intake.

“We’re targeting a population of over 1000 students by the end of the year,” she said, further urging parents to enroll more children at the institution

She challenged parents and other education stakeholders to cultivate a learning culture among their children in a bid to enable the institution to grow.

The principal said the institution was the first to be established in Igembe region in 2019 with nine pioneer students.

“We’re geared towards producing graduates who excel in different fields,” she said, adding that publicity has enabled the institution to grow.

Mwongera noted that the institution provides a conducive learning environment to all learners to enable them excel academically.

She noted with concern that the institution is facing various challenges ranging from water shortage, inadequate learning facilities, lack of a modern perimeter wall and gate for security and lack of adequate hostels as well as lack of internet required for research.

She called on the government to intervene in order to enable smooth running of the institution.

“We are grateful to our MP Julius Taitumu who promised to help us solve some of the teething problems,” said Ms Mwongera, who urged local investors to intervene.

Speaking during the event, Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu hailed the new principal for spearheading growth and development of the college.

He pledged to support the college in order to enhance skills development among young people in the region.

“I promise to  help turn the institution into a centre of academic excellence,” he said, further urging all the education stakeholders in the area to assist in marketing the institution to enable it grow.

The MP said the institution, which is the first of its kind in the vast Igembe region, will also bring about economic growth of the region.

He challenged  residents to  enrol their children into the institution.

“Some of you are not aware you’re sitting on a goldmine. The institution will positively transform the social economic status of the area,” he said.

The MP said people with technical skills are very scarce and in high demand in the job market.

“The world is currently drifting from the white collar jobs to technical skills. Let us embrace the technical skills by enrolling in the institution in large numbers,” he said.

He promised to pay registration fees of Ksh 5,000 for the first 100 students.
