Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer, Nancy Macharia has denied allegations that some teachers have remained in the same Job Group for up to 10 years.
Speaking to the press, Macharia said that the longest a teacher has stayed in the same job group is four years, and the government is doing everything possible to ensure they are promoted.
“Concerning the issue of not employing 5,000 intern teachers on permanent terms, we are going to give them priority in the current recruitment,” she stated.
Macharia said that the government plans to promote 15,552 teachers and has set aside Ksh 1.4 billion to employ new staff. Teaching vacancies will be shared out equally to ensure all 47 counties get enough teachers to address shortages.
“Since independence, teachers used to get employed directly after completing university and college until the process was frozen in 1998. Since 2019, 26,000 teachers in post-primary have been employed on a permanent basis and those contracted have been given three-year renewable terms,” Macharia added.
She urged Kenyans to be wary of conmen moving around collecting money from teachers lying to them they are in a position to help them secure.
