Suna West Member of Parliament Hon. Peter Masara has urged locals to give equal academic opportunities to girls as they have given to boys.
Masara said that educating girls is equally important since it prepares them for the future hence enhances their ability to contribute towards building the nation.
Speaking during the coronation ceremony of Winnie Abong’o as the new Oruba Milimani sub location assistant chief, Masara noted that through education, it will be possible for future generations to secure well-paying jobs and also start businesses that can compete in the international markets.
“Winnie’s parents embraced education and that’s why we are all gathered here today to celebrate her achievements as she is officially given the power to serve the citizens in the security docket. This is an achievement which should challenge other girls in this region to work hard and concentrate on their academics,” said Masara.
The constituency now has one female chief and four female assistant chiefs, a trend the MP noted is positive as both men and women are given equal opportunities to serve their people in government offices at different capacities.
He called upon parents across the country to embrace education for all irrespective of their gender, social status or physical appearance.
“We need to embrace education for all to help improve our social status and to allow our children access knowledge necessary to compete in the cooperate world,” he said.
Masara pledged to continue supporting the education sector through infrastructural development to provide a good learning and teaching environment for both learners and teachers respectively.
“I’m happy that in my first term we have been able to achieve so much and my second term will not be different as I will continue giving the necessary support to the sector especially through provision of scholarships and bursaries and infrastructural development,” he said.
He called upon the locals to support elected and government appointed leaders in improving various sectors of the economy.
The vocal legislator called for inventions of new methods of reforming locals with bad characters.
He encouraged the assistant chief to work closely with him in identifying ‘changaa’ brewers in the area in order to help them start other decent income generating businesses in a bid to curb the illicit brew sales in the region.
He also talked of empowering youths especially those who have been terrorizing locals in the region through theft by sponsoring their education in driving or mechanical engineering schools to help them earn a decent income legally.
The legislator, who has been at the forefront in advocating for women empowerment and leadership, also noted that Abong’o is the first female assistant chief within the division and that he’s pleased that the area member of county assembly is also a woman.
He pledged to support Magoto Secondary School by constructing a boys’ dormitory and an administration block.
