Union boss encourages teachers to seek elective positions

Teachers in the country have been asked to vie for public elective positions to justify their service and leadership to the society.

Addressing ECDE teachers in Kisii County, the group’s National Chairperson Mr. Lawrence Otunga told them that was high time they proved to the world that they are not mere child caretakers but also political leaders.

“A majority of people think that the only work ECDE teachers can do is baby-sitting but I urge them to do away with that stereotype,” he said.

He cited the Bomet County Woman Representative-elect Linet Chepkorir who trounced seasoned politicians to clinch the seat despite being an ECDE teacher.

Mr. Otunga expressed hope that once in parliament, Chepkorir will support bills related to the improvement of teachers’ welfare.

The chairman thanked the Kisii County outgoing governor James Ongwae for hiring ECDE teachers on permanent and pensionable terms and asked the incoming Governor Simba Arati to build on the foundation and improve education standards.

He further asked ECDE teachers in the county to join the union in large numbers to enable them have strong bargaining power.

“Let us remain united because in this way we stand strong. Let us not forget also to serve and discharge our services diligently.” he added.
