Lamu county Drug Abuse Committee chairman, Mr. Mohammed Maarufu has attributed the low education levels in the county to high consumption of drugs among the youth.
Maarufu added that high drug consumption results to dismal performance in national exams.
He said that many youth below 17 years from the region have dropped out of school due to drug and substance abuse.
“I would like to urge parents to monitor the movement of their school going children and know where they are. Parents should also counsel and guide their children to do the right thing,” he added.
He further urged parents to help teachers instill discipline in their children saying discipline is the key to success.
He added that collective responsibility of all the people in the county is needed to eliminate the menace.
“This is not a one person issue. All county residents need to fully cooperate with all education stakeholders and end the vice.” He concluded.
