TSC trains first group of secondary school teachers on CBC

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is currently training teachers to handle grades 7, 8 and 9 from both public and primary schools, including Special Needs Education (SNE) institutions in preparation of Competency Based Assessment (CBA) slated to begin in November 2022.

In a circular released by TSC and signed by the CEO, Dr. Nancy Macharia, the ongoing training kicked off on April 25 and is expected to end on May 13.

The number of trainers of trainers drawn from counties is 338 while those training SNE teachers are 69.
The first level of training will target teachers of Languages, Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Technical subjects where the teachers will be clustered according to departments.
Secondary schools will each nominate six teachers drawn from Languages, Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Technical subjects to participate in the training.

i. Languages – English, Kiswahili, Foreign and Indigenous Languages and Kenya Sign Language.
ii. Pure Sciences -Integrated Science – Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Health Education.
iii. Applied Sciences- Agriculture, Home science and computer studies
iv. Mathematics.
v. Humanities – Social Studies (Citizenship, Geography, History) Religious Studies, (CRE, IRE, Hindu, HRE and PPI) and live skills.
vi. Technical subjects and Creative Arts – Pre vocational and pre career – Business studies, music, sports and physical education Home science.
Trainers of Trainers (ToTs)
The Trainers of Trainers will train regular teachers at the Sub-county level and the SNE teachers at the county level. The following will participate as ToTs;
i. Subject Tutors from teacher training colleges who are subject panelists with KICD (Both regular and SNE).
ii. Curriculum Support Officers with Bachelor’s degree in Education with two teaching subjects’ combination (Both regular and SNE).
iii. TSC Sub-County Directors with Bachelor’s degree in Education with two teaching subjects’ combination.
iv. Secondary schools Teacher Champions drawn from Languages, Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Technical subjects.
v. Secondary school SNE champion teachers.
