Marsabit county government has set aside Shs 20 million this year to sponsor 423 bright but needy students in secondary schools.

The scholarship beneficiaries will be sponsored for the entire period of their secondary education.

Speaking during the launch of the bursary kitty at Moi Girls High School, Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali presented a cheque worth Shs 20 million to the beneficiaries.

He said the beneficiaries can be discontinued from the scholarship programme due to poor performance or indiscipline.

He added that all deserving children qualified for the scholarship.

He revealed that in 2019 when the scholarship fund started, 200 students benefitted from Shs 10 million.

Parents from Marsabit praised the county government for awarding the scholarships saying it lifted the financial burden they had.

Jenifer Elike, a parent from Loyangalani, expressed gratitude that her child’s form one school fees had been paid by the county government.

Waqo Jillo, a beneficiary,  promised to work hard while in Kagumo High School in Nyeri so that he ends the cycle of poverty in his family.
