Women have been urged to fight for elective posts to secure leadership positions in bid to promote the fight for girl child education and welfare.
Over 200 elders drawn from the four wards in Awendo Sub-county who pledged to support Dr. Iscar Oluoch, the Migori County Health CEC, said it was high time women are given a priority to set leadership standards for other young girls with future aspirations.
The elders who met at Oluochs’ home inCentral Sakwa within the sub-county registered their disappointment on why women develop cold feet when it came to fighting for other elective positions besides that of the Countys’ Women Representative.
They applauded Oluoch for taking the bold move encouraging her to ensure she campaigns to square it at the ballot with male aspirants.
Mariko Owuor from North Sakwa Ward noted that electing women into the political positions would go a long way into changing the mindset of young girls and encouraging them to work hard in their studies to achieve their goals as this will bring them hope.
Owuor called on leaders and locals to embrace women whom have so far come out to fight for various positions in the forthcoming elections.
“We have tested the leadership of our male leaders but it’s time we also consider that of a woman to also test their ability. Let’s give them hope because through this, our young girls in schools will be motivated,” said Owuor.
Joyce Okeyo noted that the qualifications and generosity of the CEC is enough proof to that she is fit to lead the constituency as the next Member of Parliament to articulate some of the issues affecting the locals.
“She is one leader who has always shown concern and given assistance to the children of this Constituency. We are fully behind her as a lady and we look forward to seeing more girls her footsteps in the future,” noted Okeyo.
Adero Osawa who is the Countys’ Secretary for Luo Council of Elders reassured their endorsement of Dr. Iscar Oluoch for the MP seat, indicating that the current Member of Parliament Hon. Walter Owino had not performed to their satisfaction.
He however warned leaders not to hold violent campaigns saying they would be forced to invite youths among other locals to withdraw their support for violent leaders in the county as a way of ensuring they guide the future generation on good morals.
Maurice Onyango, a representative of the youth at the event lamented over the nature of chaotic campaigns usually experienced within the sub-county saying that they are not ready to be used to cause chaos but are only prepared for peaceful campaigns.
“Give us jobs to curb the menace of unemployment in the region and shun from manipulating and misusing the youths to cause harm and chaos towards your political opponents.” Onyango urged aspirants.
