NEMA, Rotary Club plant more trees for environmental conservation

National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and Rotary club of Bungoma Magharibi have planted 120 trees at Mteremko Vocational Training Center to help in conserving the environment.

Speaking to Education News, the school head Emmanuel Sifuna, said that the school needed more trees to protect its environment.

He affirmed that trees will help absorb water in the compound since the school sits on a swampy ground.

‘When there is heavy downpour, river Khalaba overflows and the school risks losing infrastructure and lives,’ he pointed out.

He added that planting trees near River Khalaba will not only prevent soil erosion, but will also beautify the environment.

Erick Matia, an officer from NEMA, asked schools to liaise with their neighboring communities to ensure that they plant trees for environmental conservation.

He also urged schools to have a central place where they dispose their wastes.

Peter Simiyu, the President of Rotary Club of Bungoma Magharibi said that his organization has partnered with Ministry of Environment and the Water and Tourism ministry in Bungoma County as well as NEMA and Simikha CBO in Bungoma County to plant trees and conserve the environment.
